Medvedev wants import substitution in drug industry
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday called for import substitution in the pharmaceutical industry, ITAR-TASS reported.
In the 1990s, Russia’s pharmaceutical industry declined and many domestic drugs were replaced with foreign ones, he said.
“(Dependence on imports) is very dangerous,” he said at a meeting devoted to the pharmaceutical industry in the city of Kozelsk in the Kaluga Region. “This situation should be corrected because we’re being held hostage by foreign suppliers and depend on their arbitrary will.”
Commenting on other issues, Medvedev urged pharmacies to properly supply those eligible for drug price discounts under Russian law with all the medicines they may require.
He also said drug prices had stabilized since the beginning of this year.
Meanwhile, Kaluga Region Governor Anatoly Artamonov proposed imposing a nationwide ban on drug advertising in the mass media in an effort to reduce the impact of ads on consumer choices.
