Unemployment still climbing in Russia
The number of Russia's officially registered unemployed currently amounts to 2.132 million people, Health and Social Development Minister Tatyana Golikova said during a ministry board meeting.
As reported earlier, the figure stood at 2.077 million as of March 10. According to a government forecast, the number of unemployed will not exceed 2.8 million by the end of 2009.
Golikova also noted that the maximum size of unemployment benefits had been raised by 50 percent since earlier this year. The government is also monitoring dismissals due to redundancies and companies' liquidations and conversions to part-time operation on a weekly basis.
Furthermore, an additional RUB 43.7bn (approx. USD 1.29bn) has been allocated to prop up the Russian labor market, Golikova said. She added that Russia's federal subjects had adopted 82 regional employment programs.
