International Congress On Cancer Surgery Opened In Southern Russia
For the first time ever, Russia will host an International Congress on Cancer Surgery that opened on Wednesday in the southern city of Krasnodar.
"A total of 654 doctors, including 50 foreign specialists have already registered here," Dr Igor Reshetov, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences told Russian Itar-Tass news agency Tuesday night.
Foreign participants represent communities of surgical oncology experts from the U.S., Britain, Germany, South Korea, India, France,Italy, Poland, Finland, Austria, Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Presidents of the World Federation of Surgical Oncology Societies (WFSOS) and the International Federation of Head and Neck have also arrived in Krasnodar.
Russia is represented by high-rank delegations of the Academy of Sciences, Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Association of Oncology Specialists.
"From the very start, the administration of the Krasnodar territory regarded the decision of the organizing committee to hold this conference here as a most serious task," the territory's Vice Governor Galina Zolina said.
"That's why we've taken all the measures to host this congress along the highest possible standards," said Zolina, who supervises the issues of public health in this densely populated and economically important part of Russia.
The fact that 700 doctors sent in the synopses of their reports a month before the opening of the congress testifies to its significance in the world of cancer treatment. The programme of the forum includes twenty seminars and section meetings.
One of the seminars will be chaired by Dr Valery Chissov, the chief oncologist of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
The organising committee will award silver medals to the authors of best presentations.
A total of 120 companies will display medical instruments at a special exhibition timed for the congress, which will continue through to May 31.
