Russia to Develop Revolutionary Bird Flu Vaccine
Already in two years, Russia will probably make a revolution in the fight against bird flu, by creating vaccine for wild birds, Nikolay Vlasov from Russia's animal and plant health watchdog Rosselkhoznadzor told RIA Novosti Tuesday.
”Choosing my words carefully, it will be a revolution. Because no one has ever attempted to control the spread of the flu virus among wild birds. But it is the cause of all troubles,” Vlasov explained.
”This matter has advanced first year, and I hope that, in two years, we will have the vaccine for wild birds as well,” he said, adding it will be the oral vaccination.
This year, Vlasov predicted, the number of birds died or killed in Russia because of the flu outbreaks will be four fold less than past year. According to the official, the bird flu killed 1.3 million in 2005, the number was 1.04 million in 2006, while this year’s forecast is roughly 260,000.
Overall, Russia has roughly 3.5 billion poultry, Vlasov said, specifying, however, that the flu has never left the country since it appeared in 2005. Russia went through four outbreaks this year, the last one happened in Krasnodar.
